Class Details: Minimum 6, Maximum 12, Minimum Age 18

Bring your imagination—creativity is personal and should be enjoyable. Rather than copying the instructor’s work, you will learn watercolor principles and techniques that you can apply in your own style. This is a fun, relaxed class.

Designed for beginning and intermediate artists, this relaxed, hands-on class explores the principles and techniques used to create convincing depth in watercolor landscapes.

A landscape composition will be provided as a starting point, or participants may bring their own subject. Topics include composition, perspective, color depth and density, object detail, and the use of highlights and shadows to create realistic landscapes.

Required materials

1. Watercolor palette with watercolor wells (paint brand, just like art, is a personal preference so bring what you use)

2. A water container or two for clean water

3. Various size watercolor brushes. You’ll need large brushes (hake, wash, mottler, and/or large round) and detail brushes, various small round, liner, spire, and shader

4. 140 lb. cold press 12” x 16” or smaller watercolor paper block or paper mounted to board. Washes require stable paper.

5. Soft pencils (or ballpoint pen and graphite paper) for creating initial composition layout

6. An old towel or plastic tablecloth to cover your work area

Contact the instructor if you need instructions on mounting paper to a board.

John England Boffemmyer III.

John is a retired Director of Digital Technologies for a large conglomerate. His career spanned the infancy of computers to modern software technology; from use of technology in computer aided design and engineering, software programming to graphic art and website design. He holds a patent for “System and Method for Import and Export from a Solid Modeling Program”. John was published in technology magazines and was the design manager for IBM’s first supercomputer. He holds several degrees in Computer Science.

John’s first summer job after his freshman year of college was with a printing company in their graphics department where he learned the process steps for creating commercial printed material. This created a lifelong fascination with art and the creative ability of the human mind.

He is a self-taught watercolor artist that has been painting for 15+ years, and he continues in website design and graphic art.
