- ➤ Hoptown Brewing celebrated its fourth birthday and reached an $84,000 milestone in donations for local nonprofits through its Sip It Forward program—where guests deposit a wooden token with every pint of blonde ale purchased. - ➤ A Big Lots store reopened yesterday in Mooresville as local shoppers wonder when additional locations will open—Variety Wholesalers acquired 219 stores out of bankruptcy last year and has not yet announced further reopening dates. Mooresville Tribune
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Mooresville Graded School District Board approved teacher salary supplements up to $977 that will be paid in June, set retest dates for May 14-16, and authorized spending up to $293,596.52 for new high school cafeteria furniture. Mooresville High School is planning a 2027 European field trip for up to 80 students with early sign-up costs at $178 per month, and awards were given to students and staff for their achievements. - ➤ Iredell-Statesville Schools officials said they face a nearly $3 million shortfall and will make cuts to staff and programs to balance the budget for the upcoming school year — proposals include reducing 12 teaching positions, ending the virtual academy, closing a daycare for infants, and cutting central office roles — while they use their fund balance and local funds to cover the gap. Officials expect these changes to be implemented in the coming months to address the deficit. Iredell Free News

- ➤ At the end of 2024, the Davidson Lands Conservancy secured conservation easements on 56 acres including a 12-acre parcel in Mooresville behind Pine Lake Preparatory School—where local residents Mark and Ann Prior preserved their land—and a 44-acre donation near Concord now managed as the Charles A. Cannon, III Memorial Land Preserve, bringing DLC's total to 523 acres of easements and stewardship of over 800 acres. The move protected vital ecosystems, water and air quality, and wildlife habitats for future generations. Mooresville Citizen

- ➤ The Town Board unanimously approved the rezoning of the 187-unit Lanterna development on a 65.3-acre tract—design changes including extra green space and a new traffic signal address neighbor concerns while home building will start later in 2025 with the first home closing in 2027. They also approved a contract for up to $10,210,900 to renovate Moor Park—an old baseball park that will be upgraded in two phases with work done by May 1, 2026—and noted that the Highway 150 widening project and $2.5 million for sidewalks will affect local transport.
