COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Christian Mission announced that its new 27,000-square-foot Betty & Randy Marion Center at 919 N. Main Street will open May 1 and include classrooms, a computer lab, a community room, and private offices to boost services for families facing financial struggles. It will be closed from April 21-30 for moving and will host an open house on April 29 for those interested in the new programs and volunteer opportunities.  Iredell Free News
  • Mooresville's 42nd Race City Festival will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Main Street and Broad Street closed for food trucks, crafts, games and live entertainment—rain or shine.  Mooresville Citizen

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mooresville Arts announced the winners of its 47th Anniversary SpringFest Judged Show and Competition where 87 artists submitted 158 entries in various art forms that are on display at the Mooresville Arts Gallery until May 15. Judge Emily T. Andress selected winners including 1st Place Award winner Rachel J Haungs — and local sponsors Four Corners Framing Gallery and Lake Norman Realty Inc helped support the event.  Iredell Free News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office honored 27 Citizens Academy graduates on Thursday evening, including several family groups and close friends. The academy offered hands-on activities—like canine and drone demonstrations, jail tours and shooting ranges—to build community trust, and nearly 500 local residents have completed the program since 2014.  Iredell Free News
  • County officials from Iredell and Wilkes met on Wednesday to review the Wilkes-Iredell Fire Department after many members resigned from its Monday meeting to check that the department can still serve the community. The department will invite the N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal to verify staffing levels and will launch a recruitment campaign and community day—steps to keep services uninterrupted as officials continue to monitor its operations.  Iredell Free News

HEALTH NEWS

  • NCDHHS launched its Fight the Bite campaign in April to show locals how to avoid tick and mosquito bites — students in grades K-12 submitted posters for a contest that will help share these safety tips. More than 900 cases of vector-borne diseases were reported in 2024 and health experts advise using EPA-approved repellents, wearing long sleeves, and checking for ticks after outdoor activities.  Iredell Free News
