  • Friends of Lake Norman State Park will sponsor a spring hike for senior women at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14 at Lake Norman State Park — retired environmental educator Julie Higgie will lead the group as they meet at the Lake Shore Trailhead off Short Leaf Drive for a walk lasting less than two hours to see spring plants and nesting birds.  Iredell Free News

  • On Monday, deputy J. Lee pulled over Statesville resident Steven Lamont Bailey, 51, for a registration violation — a search of his vehicle uncovered 22.5 dosage units of Ecstasy, 5.96 grams of Fentanyl, 11 dosage units of Alprazolam, 6 dosage units of morphine, 2 dosage units of Oxycodone, and 20 grams of Marijuana — leading to his arrest and a $250,000 bond on several drug trafficking charges.  Iredell Free News

  • State lawmakers are proposing House Bill 828 to ban proposition bets on college sports and restrict in-person wagering near game venues—responding to college athletes’ complaints about pressure from bettors when their performance fell short. A related measure will direct up to $11 million from sports wagering tax revenue to boost public school coach salaries starting with the 2025-26 school year.  Mooresville Tribune
  • Representative Todd Carver from the NC House Regulatory Reform Committee said he attended a two-hour presentation by the John Locke Foundation on occupational licensing and its impact on job opportunities. He explained that easing high training requirements for professions like barbers and teachers can remove barriers to work and boost our local economy (citing significant job losses and increased costs as factors).  Iredell Free News

  • Iredell Ear, Nose and Throat will open in Statesville with Dr. Jeffrey E. Brink leading the new practice. An open house and ribbon cutting will be held on Thursday, April 24 from 4 to 6 p.m.—the public may meet the team and learn about treatments for ear, nose and throat conditions.  Iredell Free News

  • Special Olympics Iredell County will host its third annual golf tournament at Statesville Country Club on Wednesday, April 23. Teams will pay $400 per team to compete in a four-member Captain's Choice event, with registration and lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start set for 1 p.m. as all proceeds benefit the athletes.  Iredell Free News
