- ➤ Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Island Forest Lane in Mooresville on Monday and arrested convicted felon Chazman Antonio Houston after detecting the odor of marijuana and finding a loaded Taurus G3 handgun in his white Cadillac Escalade—he was charged with gun possession, drug offenses and outstanding warrant violations with a secured bond of $50,000 and an additional $6,000 bond. - ➤ Registered Nurse Lisa Warren from Iredell Cardiopulmonary Rehab explained that daily tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable deaths and is linked to lung disease, heart attack, stroke, respiratory disease and cancer—nicotine builds residue in blood that thickens it. She noted that while cigarette smoking has declined, e-cigarette use has increased and a free smoking cessation program is now available for those who want to quit. Iredell Free News

Department of Health and Human Services Division of Aging will start handing out fans statewide on May 1 until Oct. 31 to help older adults and people with disabilities stay cool during hot weather—local agencies will work with donors Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress and Dominion to support the program that has helped reduce heat illness since 1986.
