CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Benjamin Wesley Overton, 31, was arrested after a fatal crash on April 19 at 10:10 p.m. on I-77 south near mile marker 62 that resulted in the deaths of two Mooresville residents — further investigation led the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office to upgrade his charges to include two counts of aggravated felony death by vehicle and two counts of second-degree murder. - ➤ South Iredell High senior Mary Elizabeth Miller has been awarded a Morehead-Cain Scholarship and will attend UNC Chapel Hill in the fall + she earned the honor through strong academics, leadership in school clubs, and community service. Iredell Free News
- ➤ Fourteen I-SS students were picked by the Board of Education in April to attend the 2025 N.C. Governor’s School this summer for subjects like math, science and art—meeting strict criteria based on grades, essays, recommendations and service. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews with G.L. Wilson Building Company began demolition and site work at historic Moor Park on South Broad Street in mid-April after the town board approved up to $11.3 million for first-phase upgrades—these improvements will add a 900-seat grandstand, new restroom and concession facilities, a turf field and more and are set for completion by May 2026. The project will move the Mooresville Spinners summer league team to Mooresville High School, with their home opener scheduled for May 30 (versus the Carolina Disco Turkeys). Mooresville Citizen
- ➤ Lincoln County sent a letter of intent to withdraw from the Lake Norman Marine Commission, which has governed the lake for over 55 years, and if the county votes on May 5 the commission will dissolve effective June 30—leaving Lake Norman without its current rules for boating safety and inspections.
