  • Jenny Reilly—who served in ministry for over 30 years—and her husband Dan began the first Magnolia Soap & Bath Co. franchise at 135 Cross Center Road, set to officially open Friday, May 16, and will donate all proceeds from their special 'Moving Mountains' soap to Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.  Mooresville Citizen

CRIME NEWS

  • A Statesville woman, Dewan Lafaye Alexander, 48, was arrested on May 11 when an Iredell County deputy stopped her Honda for an expired registration—she admitted to smoking marijuana and a search found ecstasy and marijuana, leading to felony drug charges and a $3,500 bond.  Iredell Free News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning July 1, the N.C. Department of Revenue will enforce the new Transportation Commerce Tax on taxis and transportation network companies—providers will collect 1.5 percent on exclusive rides and 1.0 percent on shared rides while filing tax returns directly with the department. The tax was passed in Session Law 2023-134 and service providers must register before the new rule takes effect.  Iredell Free News
  • Mooresville town officials approved a waiver at their May 5 meeting to let representatives of the Courtyards at Brumley Farms present revised plans for the Epcon project, which proposes 108 single-family homes for a 55-and-over community and includes a major highway intersection upgrade—traffic improvements will feature a new four-way signalized intersection and a second right-in, right-out-only access point. The meeting also recognized local achievements such as plans for a law enforcement memorial and honors for Lake Norman High School sports and show choir teams—no new review date has been set for the development proposal.  Mooresville Citizen
  • Mooresville officials held ceremonial groundbreaking ceremonies last week on a project to restore historic Moor Park—located on south Broad Street—and create a venue for summer baseball and other activities. The town said the $10 million-plus project is expected to be completed next May.  Mooresville Citizen
