CRIME NEWS

  • North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced that Scott William Hughes of Saddle Back Lane in Mooresville was arrested and charged with felony insurance fraud after he told Central Insurance his daughter hit a deer on Sept. 15 when she actually struck a pedestrian a day earlier—he was arrested on May 27, released on a $10,000 secured bond, and his next court date is set for June 30.  WHKY
  • Iredell County Sheriff’s Officers arrested 48-year-old James William Smith and 43-year-old Kira Holly James from a Fairdale Road home northwest of Statesville after undercover investigators bought crystal meth and seized drugs (10 grams meth, 71 doses clonazepam, 25 doses subutex) on June 6, and the suspects are set to appear in District Court on July 1 (bonds set at $120,000 for Smith and $45,000 for James).  WHKY

  • Mitchell Community College honored 28 graduates of its 2025 Basic Law Enforcement Training class during a ceremony on June 5 at the Statesville campus. College officials and law enforcement instructors recognized the graduates’ hard work and dedication as they completed a rigorous program—preparing them for entry-level roles.  Iredell Free News
  • Iredell-Statesville Schools Superintendent Jeff James announced leadership changes for the 2025-2026 school year. Andrew Mehall, Jennifer Dalton, Carrie Tulbert, Christopher Grace, and Jamie Caldwell will start new roles on July 1 while Colleen Guerin becomes principal at Northview Academy on June 16 — the moves affect five district schools.  Iredell Free News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mooresville commissioners passed a resolution on June 2 to lower the speed limit to 25 mph on West Lowrance Avenue—responding to safety concerns raised after a traffic study with police involvement. New signs are being installed today along the road between Norman Drive and W. Wilson Avenue.  Iredell Free News
  • Yesterday, June 11th, Governor Josh Stein announced more than $58 million in broadband funding to connect 10,076 households and businesses in 26 counties to high-speed internet—$41 million of which comes from federal American Rescue Plan funds and $17 million from selected providers, with awards requiring speeds of at least 100 Mbps for downloads and uploads.  WHKY
  • The town board approved the fiscal 2026 budget on June 2 that keeps the 43.36-cent tax rate, adds 24 staff positions, and raises water and sewer rates while balancing spending cuts with increased costs; town officials also honored police dogs—K9 Kato and K9 Ramon—for their service during a simple outdoor ceremony.  Mooresville Citizen
