  • Iredell County Sheriff's deputies arrested registered sex offender Ian Kelley Shuemaker, 42, at an abandoned home on Brawley School Road on July 13 after an accidental 911 call led them to find him in the basement along with a small bag of methamphetamine — he now faces charges of breaking and entering and controlled substance possession while on probation for a federal narcotics conviction.  Iredell Free News

  • Attorney General Jeff Jackson and attorneys general from 24 states filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education—arguing that freezing over $165 million in federal education funds is unlawful and endangers nearly 1,000 teaching jobs—while officials warned the cut disrupts summer programs and critical classroom support. The lawsuit challenges the federal decision that has already threatened essential public school services statewide.  Iredell Free News
  • Attorney General Jeff Jackson and 24 other states filed a lawsuit on July 14 to stop federal funding cuts that will remove over $165 million from North Carolina public schools and risk nearly 1,000 educator jobs — the suit follows an unexpected halt in funds on June 30 and aims to protect rural districts that could lose more than $300 per student.  WHKY
