Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 15th of August.
Good morning, Mooresville.
🏘️ Community
Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region is applying for a USDA-RD-HCFP-HPG grant to fund essential repairs to owner-occupied homes in Iredell County for low- to very-low-income residents — the repairs will fix urgent issues such as roof or plumbing hazards — and the public may submit comments on the Statement of Activities until September 3.
🎓 Education
Jonathan Ribbeck has been hired as chief of schools by Mooresville Graded School District.
He brings years of work from Iredell-Statesville Schools—where he helped improve elementary programs and led school improvement efforts—and his leadership is expected to boost success in our schools.
The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association of Iredell County invites community members to attend a fundraiser on September 13 at the Iredell County Cooperative Extension Center in Statesville.
Doors open at 8:30 a.m. + a continental breakfast, garden tours, and a Q&A will be held before a presentation by acclaimed landscape designer Jay Sifford.
Iredell-Statesville Schools has proposed that students keep their phones off during school unless they qualify for a medical exception or an approved educational plan — the change will take effect once the policy is fully adopted.
🏛️ Government
Attorney General Jeff Jackson joined a group of 37 state attorneys general in warning Instagram to change its new location-sharing feature—this tool shows a user's exact spot for 24 hours and could put children and violence victims at risk.
The group urged Instagram to disable the feature for minors and to give users an easy way to opt out.
